Bakewell Weekender
'Social' Edge Cycleworks Shop Ride
Day 1 - Sat 18th Sep '10
Although seven people had put there names down for the first of the Bakewell Weekender rides illness and last minute work commitments cut the number down to two. Not that it was a problem, we still had a great time. The weather was kind and the trails were dry so we got to experience my Bakewell - Beeley Hill route at its best.
While the White Peak isn’t as rugged as the Dark Peak it still contains some great riding. Slippery roots and limestone kept our concentration levels high. The rolling hills weren’t easy on our legs either, there were plenty of them and they contained some steep gradients.
It was a ‘Social’ ride so when Martin, who was new to the rides, began to tire and fall back we reduced the pace to enjoy the scenery more. There was plenty for us to look at, including picture postcard views across to Chatsworth House with deer grazing in the grounds.
John, an experienced ‘Social’ rider, had his own issues. After falling off five times, mostly at random, embarrassing places, he worked out it was due to his new pedals being tight so he couldn’t unclip easily. Fortunately it was an easy fix and the only thing hurt was his pride.
To complete the ride we descended into Bakewell on a steep, rooty woodland track that left us with big smiles. It was a fantastic trail to finish the ride with, so good that we had to go to the Wheatsheaf and celebrate with a pint.
